Naperville Concrete From the South Side Up
Naperville spans DuPage and Will counties, and from Joliet the closest part is the south side, where we do most of our work as concrete contractors in Naperville. The Will County portion of the city lies in Wheatland Township to the southwest and DuPage Township to the southeast. Much of that area was built as Naperville grew from 42,330 residents in 1980 to 85,351 in 1990 and 128,358 in 2000. In 2020 the city had 149,540 people and 55,348 housing units.
Concrete from the boom years
The population tripled across the 1980s and 1990s, and the concrete poured in those years is now 25 to 45 years old. South-side driveways often have cracked aprons, settled panels at the garage and salt scaling. Back patios from that era are usually small and many have tipped toward the house. Replacing them is a chance to go bigger, add a stamped border or connect the patio to a side walk.
Flat prairie and the DuPage River
Wikipedia describes Naperville as primarily flat prairie before settlement, and the city sits on the DuPage River, with parts draining to its West Branch. In 1996, 14 inches of rain fell in under 24 hours and DuPage County was declared a disaster area; the city flooded again in 2013. Flat lots and heavy storms make drainage the first thing we plan. Every patio and walk gets a steady slope away from the house, and we look at downspouts and sump lines before we pour.
The city sidewalk program
The City of Naperville says public sidewalk maintenance is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, and it runs a Sidewalk and Curb Maintenance Program. Its replacement criteria include a height difference of 1 inch or more between sections, a walk broken into three or more pieces, or 50 percent or more of the surface spalling. Homeowners can use a private contractor for qualifying sections and still be eligible for the program, but terms change, so check the current rules with the city before scheduling a public walk.
The historic east side
The Naperville Historic District covers 573 buildings in the older eastern part of the city and was listed on the National Register in 1977. Walks and steps there are part of the streetscape, so we keep finishes simple and joint lines straight.

Naperville Questions
Who is responsible for the public sidewalk in front of my Naperville home?
The city says the adjacent property owner is responsible, and it runs a Sidewalk and Curb Maintenance Program to help with qualifying sections. Check the current program terms with the city first.
Do you work in north Naperville too?
Our closest work is on the Will County side, but we serve the whole city. Call and we will let you know scheduling for your area.
Can a new patio fix water pooling by my back door?
Often, yes. A new patio sloped away from the house, combined with downspouts routed away from it, usually solves pooling.
