Wilmington Concrete on the Kankakee
Wilmington is one of the older towns in our area, and the concrete contractors in Wilmington that homeowners call usually find walks, steps and driveways that have been in place a long time. The city was founded in 1836 and incorporated in 1854, after Thomas Cox built water-powered mills on the Kankakee River near Alden's Island. It had 5,664 residents and 2,475 housing units at the 2020 census.
The city sidewalk program
Wilmington runs a sidewalk program in which the city shares the cost of eligible repairs with residential owners, first come, first served, while funds last. The city overview lists the problems that qualify: a vertical offset between sections greater than two inches, a gap between sections greater than two and a half inches, surface deterioration that creates a hazard, or water ponding for about three days. Driveway approaches and aprons are not covered and are the owner's responsibility. The program runs on the city fiscal year, May 1 to April 30, so check the current terms with the city before scheduling.
Approaches and aprons
Because the city program does not cover driveway approaches, those are a common call. An approach takes the most abuse of any part of a driveway, from plows, turning tires and water off the street. We replace them with a thicker section, a solid base and a clean joint to the public walk and the drive.
On the river
Wilmington sits on the east bank of the Kankakee, and a large island in the river is mostly city park, which gives the town its nickname. The city sits at about 528 feet, lower than Joliet. Lower ground near the river can stay wet, and we account for that with deeper base and careful grading.
Route 66 town
The Eagle Hotel at Route 53/66 and Water Street was a stop on U.S. Route 66, and the Gemini Giant statue moved to South Island Park in March 2024. With Route 66's 100th anniversary in 2026, downtown has been getting attention. Older homes near downtown have narrow drives, front steps and walks that are often the original concrete or patched many times.

Wilmington Questions
Does the Wilmington sidewalk program cover my driveway apron?
No. The city overview says driveway approaches and aprons are the owner's responsibility. We can replace the apron on its own or with the driveway.
How do I know if my sidewalk qualifies for the city program?
The city lists offsets over two inches, gaps over two and a half inches, hazardous surface deterioration and ponding for about three days. If you are unsure, the city lets you apply for an inspection.
Can you replace steps on an older Wilmington home?
Yes. We remove the old steps, pour new ones on a solid footing and match the height to the door or porch.
