Romeoville Concrete, Built to Village Standards

Romeoville is one of the few towns around Joliet that spells out its concrete standards in detail, and that is useful when you are hiring concrete contractors in Romeoville. The village engineering guide calls for concrete driveways at least 6 inches thick in a 5-bag mix with a minimum strength of 3,500 psi, set on 6 inches of CA-6 stone, with 6x6 welded wire mesh or a fiber additive. We plan every Romeoville driveway around those numbers from the first measurement.

More village rules worth knowing

The same guide limits a residential driveway or curb cut across public property to 25 feet wide unless Public Works allows more, and requires the drive to be at least 9 feet wide for its full length. Slope must fall between 2 and 8 percent. Most homes get one driveway and one curb cut; a horseshoe drive is only allowed on lots wider than 100 feet. Any apron has to be rebuilt in concrete even if it was asphalt before. Residential public sidewalks are 5 inches thick, thickened to 6 inches where they cross a driveway, over 4 inches of aggregate.

Hampton Park and the first wave of homes

In 1957 more than 600 acres of wetland along Route 53 became the Hampton Park subdivision, and 400 more acres were added in 1964. Population climbed from 3,574 in 1960 to 12,888 in 1970. Those homes now have concrete that is 50 or 60 years old, often on ground that was wet to begin with. We see sunken drives, broken stoops and walks lifted by tree roots. Replacing them means digging out soft soil and building the base back properly.

Weber Road and the newer subdivisions

The I-55 interchange at Weber Road opened on October 5, 1990, and the area along the road filled with subdivisions over the next decade. Romeoville went from 21,153 residents in 2000 to 39,680 in 2010. Homes from that period have wider drives and larger patios, and the usual problems are scaled surfaces, cracked aprons and patios that have settled toward the house.

Limestone country

Romeoville and Joliet were once known as the Stone City, and the Illinois State Capitol, unveiled in 1888, was built of Romeoville limestone. Some lots near the river have shallow rock, which can make excavation slower but gives a firm base. Others have clay that holds water. We adjust the dig and the base to what we find.
